Perched at an altitude of about 10,000 feet above sea level, the quaint village of Giu is known for its picturesque scenery and stunning surroundings.  Tourists are drawn to this sleepy village for a mysterious 500-year-old naturally preserved mummy.  It is believed to have belonged to a lama, who died while sitting at the age of only 45.  It can be seen in a still sitting position, with a rosary in its hand, and its nails, teeth and hair intact.

 Despite the lack of chemical protection, the body parts do not rot either.  A belt is tied around its body which is believed to be a gomathaka that monks used to tie around their neck and up to the knee while meditating.  Some believe that the yoga posture in which the monk is sitting can protect the body by itself.  The monk of the Gelugpa sect was called Sangha Tenzin.  The villagers affectionately call it Mami Lama.

 Today, it is housed in an independent room on top of a hill and is a major tourist attraction.  Carbon dating dates back to 1475.  Locals say that the villagers believe that the mummy takes care of the village.  In fact, there is a legend which says that the sadhu sacrificed his life to save the village from the menace of scorpions and till date no scorpion has been seen in the village.

 The 1975 earthquake in northern India uncovered an old tomb containing the mummified body of the monk Sangha Tenzin.  In 2004, the local police excavated the tomb and removed the mummy.  The mummy is remarkably well preserved, with intact skin and hair on its head.  He died in a sitting position with a rope around his neck and thighs. Local lore claims that he asked his followers to mummify him during the scorpion's infestation in the city, and when his spirit entered his body.  When released, a rainbow appeared and the scorpions disappeared.  The town is about 30 miles from Tabo Monastery which dates back to 996 AD.

 Sangha Tenzin's mummy is now on display in a temple in Guai, in the Himachal Pradesh region of India bordering Tibet, from where she was excavated.  Controlled by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police and isolated in the Himalayas, the city is very difficult to reach.  The temple where the mummy rests is open to the public.
